The Gold Rush of 1849 led to a rapid growth, San Francisco became the largest city on the West Coast at the time. Three-quarters of the city was, however, destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1906 and subsequent fires, but San Francisco was quickly rebuilt and after the Second World War, the confluence of the soldiers returning from war, the massive immigration, the liberalizing attitudes, and other factors led to the ‘Summer of Love’ and the gay rights movement, making San Francisco the center of liberal activism in the United States.
