About San Diego

San Diego

San Diego, about 13 miles from the border of Mexico, is the second-largest city in California and the eighth-largest in the nation. Founded by Spanish colonists in 1769 with the Presidio & the San Diego Mission, the city later became Mexico territory until 1850 when it officially became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War. San Diego is today a center of research in biotechnology and in military and defense-related activities. San Diego first city-center was the “Old Town” district, later replaced by the “new town”, which is present-day waterfront Downtown. San Diego is popular for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor and extensive pristine beaches.

San Diego Map, Quick Facts, and Weather

With its semi-arid climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild winters, San Diego is considered to have one of the top-ten overall best climates and one of the two best summer climates in America. The average year-round temperature is 70 °F (21 °C) with little precipitation, concentrated mostly between the months of December and March. The coldest month is January with an average temperature around 50 °F (10 °C). The city is primarily served by a light rail system called the San Diego Trolley, also known as simply “The Trolley” or by tourists as “The Red Trolley”. It’s comprised of 4 lines, plus an historic streetcar running exclusively during the holidays, and certain days of the week. The trolley is the 4th most-ridden light rail system in the nation.
